What does it mean if a site uses cookies?

As with many websites you’ve visited, all the websites Webtrade have built include cookie messages. Cookies are simply text files that can be easily read and typically contain two pieces of information, a site name and a unique user ID.

How do cookies work?

Many sites use cookies. If you are visiting one of these sites for the first time, a cookie is downloaded onto your PC. If and when you visit the site again, your PC will check to see if it has a cookie that is relevant to the site and will send the information contained in the cookie back to the site.Sites will then automatically know if you have previously visited and in some cases, will adapt the content.

Why are cookies a good thing?

Cookies can record how long each user spends on each page of a site, what links they are clicking and store data, for example, on what is in your cart. Generally, they are beneficial to websites and users, helping to make those who visit sites frequently experience a smoother user experience.

Are there any bad things about cookies?

Many people feel concern about the use of cookies, because they store information about the user. The information gathered by cookies is nothing secretive or exclusive, but many people still dislike the thought of their information, being gathered.

Is there a law regarding cookies?

Most current and up to date websites, use cookies in one way or another and many users won’t even notice the cookies working away, in the background. Before 2012, individual users have had the choice to either block or allow cookies within their internet browser.

In May 2012, however, a new EU law was introduced which required all sites that use cookies to let the user know their data, is going to be retrieved and stored.

It’s common for most sites to draw your attention to their cookie policy when you first visit the site, you can click to say you understand the policy, or you can ignore it and continue browsing as normal.

Ultimately, sites use cookies and the information stored to make online browsing and user experience a more enjoyable and easier experience.
